V-locity version 5 – The Director’s Cut

by Brian Morin 5. March 2014 07:08

As you know, we just released V-locity version 5. Here’s the director’s cut.

We committed a slew of engineers to several months of development to build an enterprise-class management console for V-locity. In a world where a couple developers with a few pizzas can create a robust app from scratch in 6 weeks, that represents a lot of apps!

Our previous management console didn’t scale beyond 500 nodes and didn’t play well with modern environments that span geographic locations with a hybrid of virtual and physical servers while provisioning some workloads to the cloud.

That meant a console needed to be built that has the ability to auto-detect the most complex environments and batch deploy V-locity in seconds. A management console that is aware of the new world order of hybrid environments – virtual, physical, cloud – and deploy and manage to all from a single point.

Customers asked for flexible pricing models whether it be volume perpetual licenses or site licenses or even subscription, and so we listened. They asked for I/O performance management that delivers insight into the anatomy of I/O behavior on all their workloads from virtual server (or physical server) to storage to help take the guesswork out of performance troubleshooting. Customers wanted to be able to set up alerts based on workload thresholds. They asked for a console that could validate V-locity before/after performance across workloads and have ongoing performance validation for continued ROI transparency.

So we built it. The whole enchilada.

Typically, when the baton is handed to marketing, the first two questions are almost always the same – “What do we call it?” and “What do we charge for it?”

When you commit engineering resource the size of a small island, the very first temptation is to productize, to monetize, to ROI-ize what you put in because there is a cost to building products.

Then again, this wasn’t really a stand-alone product, but rather a big enhancement to an existing product.

A lot of companies charge for that enhancement. Many of you have purchased hardware or software products, only to find a separate line item and SKU for the management software itself to manage the product you purchased – the never ending high tech rabbit hole of monetization where you buy cars but batteries and steering and tires are not included.

As my daughter tells me, “Dad, everyone does it.” So, in our initial brainstorming session, we kicked around the idea of doing it too. But when it came down to it, we agreed it’s not in the core tenet of our business model to disrupt.

V-locity provides performance at 1/10th the cost of the hardware alternative. That’s disruption. And in that spirit of disruption, we decided against productizing and charging for the management console.

It’s bundled with V-locity and available for free to every V-locity customer under maintenance. No extra charge required. No extra hardware required.

Announcing V-locity version 5

by Robert Woolery 28. February 2014 03:10

It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the inessentials.” - Bruce Lee

Removing the nonessential is a key element of simplicity and efficiency, yet it is deceptively difficult to accomplish. We need reminding. And then more reminding.

When I get too caught-up in what’s on my desk, in Outlook, on the calendar, I get on the phone with one of our V-locity customers and I remember what we’re doing here. Why I pull into the Condusiv parking lot every day. We hack away at the inessentials, and in doing so, we enable our customers to work better, faster, more efficiently, without buying more hardware to achieve it.

We’re very pleased to announce V-locity version 5. In this release, V-locity is now bundled with the V-locity Management Console, giving IT organizations the visibility, command, and control to optimize applications and maximize users’ efficiency—proactively managing I/O and its impact on performance across the entire environment.

Enterprise-class and cloud-ready, the V-locity Management Console enables seamless deployment and centralized management of V-locity on-premises in a virtual or physical environment, or in the cloud. With central control of assets, configuration, and performance management, admins can deploy V-locity to thousands of VMs and physical servers in just five clicks, manage a large number of licenses, and support various pricing models.

The highlights:

  • Central command and control with web-based management from a single pane of glass across geographic locations
  • Fast, non-disruptive deployment to even the most complex multi-site and hybrid environments
  • Auto-detection of virtual and physical server environments for easy asset and license management
  • Flexible pricing options from site licenses, subscription, or perpetual volume licenses
  • Single solution for virtual and physical servers
  • V-locity alert management with email notifications based on customized I/O performance profiles for any application
  • Ongoing performance validation of V-locity for ROI reporting capabilities

No more needle-in-the-haystack approach to troubleshooting. No more contending with a disjointed view of the environment. No more lack of understanding what’s happening from server to network to storage.

Maybe you’ve virtualized, maybe you’ve gone cloud, maybe you’re using VDI to ease management of so many endpoints… whatever the case—in any of these scenarios—the marketing message is always simplification.

And while simplification might be partly real, each of these strategies comes with an inherent problem: I/O. More and more I/O, which leads to serious performance degradation, more hardware to throw at the problem, increasingly formidable data centers, and more hours spent troubleshooting and stressing out. The root of the problem is I/O.

And V-locity is software that dramatically reduces I/O—literally overnight. And now it comes with the V-locity Management Console to make managing complex environments more efficient than ever.

So today I channel Bruce Lee and his thoughts on simplicity, on hacking away at the inessentials. That’s what we’re doing at Condusiv. That’s the vision of V-locity version 5. Enabling organizations to perform faster, better, simpler, happier.

When Big Data Hurts

by Robin Izsak 5. December 2013 03:38

I recently spoke with Bell Mobility's Adam Moore, a member of the organization's OSS Systems Integration Team. Bell Mobility is Bell Canada's wireless division, employing a multitude of analysts who eat, sleep, and breathe Big Data. They capture metrics and run analytics on call failures, call drops, and call volume—helping the company provide better service to their customers.

Sure we hear a lot about Big Data these days, but we need these catch phrases to talk about abstract concepts. And Big Data is as important as it is abstract: it represents a smarter way to do business, to create value from all this data we have, and to make better decisions. Big Data enables Bell Mobility directors to pinpoint inefficiencies and see where optimization is needed to maintain optimal services to a broad customer base.

So on our call, Adam told me that things had slowed down. His users were dealing with longer and longer SQL query times, which was impacting their ability to do their jobs. Faced with significant data growth and a need for faster delivery of that data to meet SLAs with their users, Adam's team needed a solution to escalating performance problems, like right now.

In assessing their options, Adam and team conducted an evaluation of V-locity® VM™. The results? A 61% reduction in I/O to the SAN, which led to 98% faster data processing times. And backups? "They used to run at 10MB per minute and sometimes didn't complete at all. Now they run at 60-120MB per minute and complete consistently."

A Blog About Bloggers Who Blog About Us

by Jerry Baldwin 7. February 2013 09:49

On contemplating the impact of his calculating engine, the world’s first computer, Charles Babbage wrote “In turning from the smaller instruments in frequent use to the larger and more important machines, the economy arising from the increase of velocity becomes more striking.” He said that in 1832.

I mention this because the idea holds true today—the bigness of everything, the immediacy of everything, the pace of everything—the greater the increase from one state to another, the more striking the difference. And that’s exactly why—when we put V-locity 4 trialware into the hands of virtualization wizards to test in their lairs—we want them to really, really put it through the wringer. The heavier the workload, the greater the application demand, the more striking the results.

Recently two virtualization pros got their hands on the V-locity 4 30-day trial, set up rigorous testing, and blogged the entire experience:

NEW V-locity 4 VM Accelerator Improves VM Performance by up to 50%

by Jeff Medina 10. December 2012 10:00

Today we are very excited to announce the release of V-locity 4 VM Accelerator. With this latest release, V-locity increases VM and application performance by up to 50% and does so without any additional storage hardware.

Let’s face it - in today’s world of virtual environments, we generate a tremendous amount of data and it’s only the beginning. In fact, findings included in a recent study by IDC titled “Extracting Value from Chaos” predict that in the next ten years we will create 50 times more information and 75 times more files.

The impact of this data explosion on server virtualization can often lead to I/O bottlenecks. This is because a physical server running multiple virtual machines (VMs) must often carry out far more I/O operations than one server running a single workload, and typical virtualization environments emulate I/O devices that run less efficiently than native I/O devices.

In essence, virtualization acts like a funnel, combining and mixing many disparate I/O streams, sending out to the disk what becomes a very random I/O pattern. To make matters worse, the more VMs are added, the more the issue is compounded as more I/O is "randomized." All of this has a very negative affect on storage performance, and renders time-honored techniques such as read-ahead buffers and caching algorithms far less effective than in conventional physical environments.

Storage I/O is the most critical issue in a virtualized environment, and can cause organizations to spend a great deal on storage, purchasing more and more disk spindles, but often using only a fraction of their capacity because of performance issues. The outcome is that, due to issues relating to performance bottlenecks in the storage infrastructure, some applications are deemed unable to be virtualized; however, a properly tuned storage environment might have accommodated those applications. So what’s the alternative? The answer is V-locity 4 VM Accelerator.

V-locity 4 VM Accelerator provides:

  • Increased application performance up to 50%
  • Up to 50% faster access to frequently accessed files
  • Faster I/O performance without the cost of additional storage hardware
  • Increased VM density per physical server up to 50%
  • Extended hardware lifespan by eliminating unnecessary I/Os
  • Automatic and real-time operation for true “Set It and Forget It®” management

What makes V-locity 4 so effective is its powerful toolkit of proactive technologies, including IntelliWrite,® V-Aware,® CogniSAN,® InvisiTasking® and the new IntelliMemory® RAM caching technology.

New! IntelliMemory™ Caching Technology
IntelliMemory intelligent caching technology boosts active data, improving I/O response time up to 50% or more while also eliminating unnecessary I/O operations from getting into the network or storage.

Improved! IntelliWrite® Technology
IntelliWrite automatically prevents the operating system from breaking files into pieces and writing those pieces in a performance penalized manner. This proactive approach improves performance up to 50% or more while preventing any negative impact to snapshots replication, data deduplication or thin provisioning growth. As this proactive approach happens at the server level, the network and shared storage simply has less I/O operations to transfer and process.

New! Performance Benefit Analyzer
The Performance Benefits Analyzer helps document the performance benefits of V-locity. The benefit analyzer looks at your current system performance, then compares these results to those after using V-locity to provide a detailed report showing specific improvements and benefits to your system.

V-Aware® Technology
V-Aware detects external resource usage from other virtual machines on the virtual platform and eliminates resource contention that might slow performance.

CogniSAN® Technology
CogniSAN detects external resource usage within a shared storage system, such as a SAN, and allows for transparent optimization by not competing for resources utilized by other VMs over the same storage infrastructure. And it does this without intruding in any way into SAN-layer operations.

InvisiTasking® Technology
InvisiTaksing allows all the V-locity 4 "background" operations within the VM to run with zero resource impact on current production.

Set It and Forget It®
Automatic and real-time operation.
